Poor Murphey

We found out this week our lovable dog Murphey has diabetes. I just feel awful about the diagnosis.

I took him to the vet about 3 weeks ago because his paw pads were swollen and bleeding. I figured this was from the ice and snow cutting his paws then leading to an infection. He was put on steroids and an antibiotic and I was told he would be drinking more water than usual.

Last week I looked at Murph and he just didn't look right. His head looked thinner than normal. My hubby put him on the scale and we were just mortified by the amount of weight he lost.

I made an appointment this week and the vet said when he walked into the room, He doesn't look good. I signed a release for blood work and xrays and Murphey stayed at the clinic all day.

My husband got the call later in the day about the diabetes diagnosis. We honestly thought Murphey had cancer and he didn't have much time. I felt some relief with a diabetes diagnosis. Diabetes can be controlled though insulin and diet.

Murphey has two insulin shots a day. I called the vet clinic about the amount of food to feed Murphey. I was a bit disturbed when I got a call back from the vet and he said Murphey should only be on one shot of insulin a day. What if I didn't call the office about a food question? Would I have killed Murphey? The doctor said he would look through the chart and call me back. He called this evening and said it should be 15ccs twice a day not 30ccs twice a day. I am so glad I called today.

We love you Murphey and we want you with us for a LONG time.

Isn't amazing how much our pets our intertwined in our lives. I can't imagine life without Casey, just as I am sure you feel the same way for Murphy. Hopefully he will live to a ripe old age. It's hard to watch them age. :(
